a mutant, no more

what an emotional and physically draining day this was.
and that was just how i felt.
how everton felt i can only imagine.
the day started out with me getting up at 5.30a so i could get a bottle of my breast milk warmed up for everton.  that way he can eat as much as his heart desires and because he won't be able to eat from 6.45a till after the surgery.
the kid was fed, brett and i were showered, and we were getting ready to go out the door.
a challenge-brett found out last night the car wouldn't start.  awesome.  so we used my cousin's car to go to salt lake.  THANKS SO MUCH to scott and katy.  for real.
and we were on our way.
we got to primary children's hospital in salt lake and brett gave everton a blessing in the car in the parking lot, which also helped calm our nerves.
we got registered and checked in at 9.15.
a doctor gave everton a little exam to make sure he's healthy enough for surgery.

the surgeon and the anesthesiologist talked to us and helped us to know what we can expect from everton after the surgery (which i was expecting everton to give us a certain finger to show how grumpy he is)
we followed the anesthesiologist to this one hallway and we came to this black and yellow tape.  and that's where we said our goodbyes.  i bursted into tears as i kissed everton's slobbery little face and off went our baby boy with the doc.  brett and i walked to the waiting room where they had snacks and drinks for us parents.  i binged on oreos as i read the Lord of The Rings.  as frodo was figuring out what to do with the one ring i kept checking the time.  his surgery ended up taking about an hour.  it went a lot faster than i thought it would and they called us back to see him.
and there he was.  a groggy little baby in the arms of a nurse.  i ripped everton away from her, shoved her out of the way and screamed "MY BABY!!"  bahahaha.  just kidding.  but i sure did tear up again.  what else is new?  he was alert enough to eat and he was huuuungry. he didn't eat for 6 hours.  i examined his little tape cast that was adorned with green dinosaurs.  my sweet darling baby.
the doctors and nurses said he did excellently during the surgery and woke up right away after.
that right there made me so happy.  i'm so grateful for the medicinal technology we have today.  i wouldn't want my little 5 month old to feel this kind of horrible pain.
we brought him home and he's been fussing and sleeping on and off.
the anesthesia was slowly wearing off so he was grumpy, sleepy, and dopey.  definitely not happy.  all he wants to do is be held and be snuggled.
i gave him some baby tylenol, fed and kissed his face, and put him to bed.

he usually sleeps wearing regular pajamas but because of the cast i feel like it wouldn't fit in the sleeves.
i didn't want to try and wrestle his pj's on him tonight.  i just wanted him to get rest as soon as he could.
i'll try the pj's tomorrow but any ideas on keeping him warm at night?  besides cutting a sleeve off of his pj's.

thanks for all the prayers and love.  i'm SO relieved this day is over.
kid lost a thumb and gained a green plastic smelling tape cast for the next 5 weeks.
we'll get to see his 5 fingered hand then!
but i have to say, i do miss his extra little thumb already...

  1. I'm so happy to know it went well. Maybe you could put some of your socks on his arms to help keep him warm at night.
